Assigning a task without sharing a document

I have an ongoing task list for myself. I do not wish to share it with anyone but want to assign people some tasks. I know I can share snippets of my sheet. Can folks reply via email and it updates my sheet?

You could use the Update Request feature to share and ask for updates.

I see that you marked @Andrée Starå's comment as not answering your question. Is there anything further we can clarify for you in regards to Update Requests?

You can use the Send Row feature to email a user the content of the row (without sharing the sheet), but if you need them to make changes to the row and have that automatically update the sheet then an Update Request is built exactly for that. You can either send these manually per-row or via an automated workflow.
