How can I reapply a sort (or filter) without having to re-enter it from scratch?

Refreshing the browser page doesn't do it.  It would be great if there was a "Refresh" button somewhere.

Hi Tom - There are a couple ways to reapply your filter without re-entering it from scratch. After you make your changes, SAVE your sheet, THEN refresh the sheet (Sheet actions button > Refresh).  If you just refresh your sheet (and save when prompted) it will not reapply the filter.  The other option is to navigate to another sheet then navigate back to the sheet you were working on.

For filters - yes, saving and then refreshing my sheet does reapply the filter correctly.  However, just switching to another sheet and back doesnt seem to do anything.

For sorting - neither of these approaches reapplies the sort criteria.  For instance, if I have a sheet sorted on column A and then add a row with a value in A that is out of sequence, save/refresh does not apply the previous sort - I have to go back and specify the sort columns from scratch; it would even be helpful if the sort dialog would display the previously entered sort criteria.

Yes Tom you are correct - sorting will not be reapplied when you refresh your sheet (sorry, I didn't see that part of your question). Sorting is a single action you take in your sheet, rather than 'setting a sort' the way you set a filter. We are looking at improving the sort functionality in a future release but I do not have any specific information on how this might look. I will pass your feedback along to our product team to aid them in the development.

  • This is also something I really wish was a feature. As I have events that get listed and created by web form users they either appear at the bottom or the top and always need to be manually moved into the right slot, dispite asort being applied. It woukd be much better if the sort wasapplied as a fitler, especially when multiple entries are being made by multiple form  users and sometimes a task gets over looked as it goes to the bottom of the list instead of in the time slot between tasks where it belongs. This leads to unfortunate oversight which can have deviating results if not spotted early. Calendar view at least shows things according to date. But it should be a standard feature for list/grid/gant view.

  • Would you be able to work from a report instead of directly within the sheet? A report sorts automatically when you open, refresh or run it. It's essentially a cross-sheet filter as well, so this might be a solution for you.

THink of reports as just Remembered filters without the effort. Well said Alllie.

  • I'l give reports a try.  They solve the above problems, including the one Monika brings up about web forms.  However, it seems like sorting on a dropdown column on reports works differently than in the grid: on reports its alphabetical but on a grid its according to the dropdown order as you would expect.  I'll create a separate discussion for this one.  Thanks everyone!

See my responce on your discussion ablut sorting dropdowns.

  • I would also love to see the column headings as a sort (similar to the "format as table" feature in excel).  It would be great to get an immediate sort of the spreadsheet just by clicking on the heading of a column.

  • I would also like to see this.

  • Hi,

Please do it, it's so boring to refill the same sort filters everytime.

    Hello Smartsheet,

We are now more than 3 years on from the original request and Travis' update indicating that "We are looking at improving the sort functionality in a future release". I'm wondering if any progress has been made.

Using reports in combination with the source sheet is tedious as you are constantly switching back and forth between the two.

The most practical solution would be to combine the sort functionality into the filter dialogue.

  • Numerous threads on this and yet still not a thing.  Why?

  • I would also like to see a fix to this sorting issue. And I think it could be a simple fix for the Smartsheet. Just add a 'Saved Sort' button. You could save a specific sort to the button the same way you do conditional formatting. Then when you click the button, the sheet would refresh with the specific sort saved to the button.
