Compare two dates and apply conditional formatting
I have two columns of forecasted dates UTILITY and IN SERVICE. When the UTILITY date is past the IN SERVICE date I want both cells hilighted. For example if UTILITY = 9/30/17 and IN SERVICE = 5/10/17, I want both cells to be red.
I understand That I'll have to use a third column to base the formatting from but I cannot get the formula to work out correctly. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Try this in your third column...
=IF(UTILITY5 > [IN SERVICE}5, "Red", "Normal")

That worked for me too - thank you! Seeing as this answer was posted about 16 months ago, I just want to add that I needed to adjust the formatting a little to only use brackets and parenthesis:
=IF([UTILITY]5 > [In Service]5, "Red", "Normal")
