Creating Web forms with Auto-populated form content

I see that you can auto populate a section of the form by manually entering (post-URL):

&ColumnName=text

where any spaces in the text are replaces with %20.

Question: I first used the substitute function to replace %20 for all spaces in a column that contains the desired text.  But am unable to have the sheet pull that resultant text and combine it with the URL string.  I get an "UNPARSABLE" message.

Is there any way to create a formula that can create the appropriate URL?

@Daniel - rather than using the URL to add default text, you should do it from the edit form menu. When editing your web form, click on the field and on the right panel, look for the Default Value text box.

  • John:

the value is changed for each vendor I send this to, changed to match a specific construction Division (out of 36) I am requesting them to bid, so I need a series of URL with distinct values matching the value of the column I am referencing, not a default value.  I want to avoid having to create each URL by hand.

I can acheive this easily with concetante and substitute functions in Excel.  But would prefer to acheive this inside smartsheet automatically, rather than going through that extra step.   The sytax for those functions does not parse in smartsheet it seems.

John: REsponse from Smartsheet:  looks like I am doing this in Excel!  It is not possible now.

Anyway, thanks for your help, much appreciated.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us. Currently there isn’t a way to automatically generate the URL of a web form to have it pre-populate based on who is filling it out, but I’ll add your vote for this capability to our enhancement request list.

While you can’t autogenerate these URL’s, you can change the syntax of the URL manually to pre-populate the Web Form. For more information on this, here is a link to our help article: http://help.smartsheet.com/customer/portal/articles/522221#submitform.

Please let me know if you have any questions on this.

  • Please add another vote for this capability!  It seems like such a shame to have all this data available in Smartsheet and not have it available in the Forms Capability.

  • Hello - I am interested in this thread, in particular the ability to link two forms. We have a planning form which has been completed by various offices for discrete areas of technical work (I work in WHO), in some cases two or three discrete areas in one country; we plan to create a separate, but connected form, in which progress updates are provided. This form will included drop down lists, and text boxes for users to enter details. In addition % progress etc functionality, as well as the ability to attach documents.

So in summary, the user needs to easily retrieve the information they entered initially, and then add updates every 3 months.

    Is this possible in SmartSheets?

    Thanks, Matt

  • I add my vote...the initial thread is 3 years old so surely there has been some progress?

  • I'll vote on this enhancement as well.  Basic auto-fill capability would be very handy.
