Download a Copy
I am currently trialing Smartsheet and am loving it so far. My question is what if there is no internet access, internet failure. Is it possible to download a copy of the file so that there is a backup you could use if no internet access?

You can email yourself a PDF or Excel copy of the sheet as often as you like.

Amanda is correct, you can email yourself an Excel version of the sheet. You can also export an Excel version directly by selecting the Sheet Actions button on your toolbar and clicking Export > Export to Excel.
Another option is to create backups of your sheets which will export all included sheets/discussions to Excel files and can include attachments. Here's information on backing up your data: http://help.smartsheet.com/customer/en/portal/articles/506499-backing-up-your-data

Having the backup won't be the same as keeping all of your workflow going.
The formatting and functionality of Smartsheet and MS Excel while similar is not the same. Depending on things like functions, conditional formatting, normal formatting, predecessors / durations in schedules, you likely won't be able to import the new data directly into Smartsheet.
If you run into an extended outage, or even I planned one (I would do this for long plane trips), backup or export the sheets you will be working on and keep track of what has changed or been added.
Be aware that when importing an Excel sheet, there may be new columns created because of the way the data is arranged.
What I'm stumbling to say is that be prepared to reconcile the sheets when you can access them again.
I also used the Highlight Changes feature (the highlighter icon on the toolbar) to see what had changed since I last viewed the sheet in case my co-workers got to a sheet before I did.
Not too burdensome, but something to watch out for.
