Gantt View: Open to Today's Date Option

I am a fairly new SS user and am owner/admin for a large project/Gantt sheet that is shared internally with other Project Managers, who are also fairly new to SS. They have edit permission, but are not admins. I have set the project option to open the sheet/Gantt view to 'today's date'. My Gantt view opens as set/expected but that behavior does not seem to be inherited by the other PMs.

The earliest date on the project is Aug 30, 2018. When the PMs open the sheet the Gantt timeline defaults to a start date of Feb 2018 so they have to scroll through (to Dec as of this posting) to see the Gantt details.

What do I, or they, need to do to have their sheet/Gantt automatically open to 'today's date'? I'd prefer not to make everyone an Admin.

Thanks

It sounds like you did the right thing.

I would check in with Support to make sure that the product is working as intended. :|

  • Thanks Mike; I thought so too.

You're welcome. Report back and let the community know if there was an error there or if there is something else needed. Sometimes actions in smart sheet have to be set in each viewer's account but some actions are forced on everybody. There is a lot of ambiguity! I'm looking forward to hearing what you discover. Thanks.

This is a copy of the response I received from support:

"Thank you for contacting Smartsheet Support. I understand that the gantt chart view defaults to today's date in Admin view, but not for editors shared to your sheet.

This has been discovered to be a Bug and we're currently working to resolve the issue.  There is no current ETA of when this will be resolved.  Also, there is no workaround for the viewing issue at the moment. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause the editors shared to the sheet, and hopefully our core team can address this soon.  Thank you for your patience as we work to correct this.

I guess we are in wait mode...

  • I'm having the same issue. Specifically, I've set up a template in which the Gantt chart opens to "today's date." Then I create sheets from the template. But when others on my team open those sheets, the sheets don't open to today's date.

Hopefully, they will resolve this bug soon. Report the issue to support and let them know it's affecting your team. The more people alert them, the more they will know this is an important fix.

  • I am having the same issue with setting the gantt chart to open to today's date. Has anyone heard if that feature is working yet?

  • We are experiencing the same problem. I found in another thread where this bug was raised in 2015. So it has been 5 years without a solution.

  • I've found a work-around: If you create a report based on a sheet viewers have the ability to set the timeline display to start at today's date, and the function appears to work. It would still be nice to have this feature work for Editors and Viewers on the sheet itself.

  • This is still a problem today.

  • Still an issue today 12/16/2021.

Mine is specifically for opening a report with a Gantt chart in it, from a Dashboard.

  • Please fix this. It's a pain for so many users.

This is still an issue, I've submitted a product enhancement request on this issue. But this needs to be addressed.

Going to pitch in here, I have not experienced this issue until about 2 weeks ago. On emailing SS I received the following, "Upon trying and testing on my end, whenever I try to use the 'Today's Date' function in the Project Settings- it is working as expected. Upon checking our resources, there are currently no known issues in Smartsheet. See https://status.smartsheet.com/"

The email went on with a host of options to try, I opened SS outside our cloud network without issue however, once back in our cloud the issue continues even today; it's driving out IT Dept. mad trying to resolve.

In the end, if SS are not experiencing the issue and there are no known issues in SS there is nothing for them to enhance or correct!

    Cheers.

    Forever forwards Backwards never.

  • Very much an issue for me and making take up of this software very difficult in my department. I've spent ages on a specific tool for lots of viewers, only realising it won't open to today's date at the end. It makes Gant view, a key component of Smartsheets very un-useable for the majority of users.
