How do I link Cells to assign people?

In the sheet shown below I have some tasks assigned to specific people regardless of who is hired. Other tasks get assigned based on who the manager of the new hire is  (see "manager" in the assigned to field). I have added a row for who the manager is (row 5). When a new person is hired, I would like to add the manager's name into row 5 and have all the "manager" assigned to cells auto fill in based on that value.

I tried using =[task name]5 but I get an error that that's not supported. I am hoping that if I can figure out the correct formula I can also have the reminders go to the person that gets assigned as long as the sheet is also shared with them. Is this possible?

Thank you,

Jamie

Is there a reason that you are doing this vertically ( rows) verses Horizontally (Columns. )?

what is the trigger you use to determine a manager needs to attached to the task?

  • The sheet is really more of a Gantt chart so it needs to be done vertically. The top sections is just a some general information that HR wanted to see right on top. When you enter the New Hire Orientation date for example all of the other dates are calculated based off that one. But they wanted to see it right on top and not in order or in between other tasks.

For the manager part. There are a bunch of tasks that are assigned to whatever the department manager is of the new Hire. For example if it's a new sales person the sales manager is assigned. If it's a new engineer the services manager get assigned. I'm trying to figure out a way to fill in ALL the assigned to cells for the appropriate manager without having to go down the whole list and paste in their name everywhere they need to be assigned. Some of the tasks will have email reminders attached to their respective rows so I want to make sure the task will get emailed out correctly.

Contact list columns don’t support formulas so there won’t be an automated way to do this but you could add the manager’s name in the first row, then drag fill it down the rest of the rows.

  • ok, thank you. That's how I have been filling them in currently.
