Quickly edit linked cells

Enhancement Request: The ability to edit cells linked from another sheet - either directly or by double clicking and being able to edit the original sheet in a pop-up.

I have a master sheet with all of our project level data on it and engineers have individual sheets for their projects which allows them to add any kind of task tracking they want to and set their own reminders/notifications without monkeying with our entire data set. We link multiple cells to that individual sheet for them so that we can be sure they aren't making updates to dates without those updates making it into our master sheet.

I wish there was a much quicker way to edit the data in linked cells. Currently, the user has to double-click, then choose Go to Sheet, then scroll/search to the cell they want to edit, then edit, then switch tabs back to the original sheet they were working on and wait for it to reload.

Can you improve this process? Does anyone else have ideas?

  • YES!  This would be wonderful.  For me, this is my #1 on my wish list.

I would agree this would be a very nice feature to have.

I don't have a good use case to really test against, but as a possible temporary solution - have you experiemented with using reports?  I'm sure it's not as optimal as working from the master sheet, but if the team was performing certain update functions in bulk, you could create a report with the fields that would need to be updated from source sheet plus any additional columns for context.   You can then edit those fields directly from the report.  ( You do have to hit Refresh to see the updates in the report. )

    Just a thought...

  • Hi All—

I'd be happy to pass along any feedback to improve this process. Can you elaborate on how you'd like this to look? How would you want this to be represented in the application?

One suggestion I have is to create Update Requests for rows on the individual sheets: https://help.smartsheet.com/articles/504779-using-update-requests

YES! Please log my vote for this feature too!!!

What I'd love is to be able to do something like right+click in a linked cell and "reverse" the cell linkage direction/relationship.

For instance, my colleague manages the "master sheet" that tracks all of our report processing functions. I manage a sheet with all of her rows/cells linked to my sheet for just those functions related to editing and then I have many more cells for each row that just I track. On my sheet, and with my update requests, I track the number of pages at each draft stage. So once the update request fills in the new page count, I have to remember to go back into her "master sheet" and now manually update hers. Or, I have to manually relink each of those page count cells which is arduous as we might have 20 reports with 10 different draft stages at any one time.

  • I agree with all the previous comments.  I would love to see (once a cell link is created) to be able to double click/right click mouse on the linked cell which would take you to the linked cell and then be able to work on the sheet.  This would be very useful when you are working on two linked sheets and need to constantly update data across multiple cells.  Right now you when you click on the cell linked cell it takes you to the original find sheet screen.

Is this feature on the horizon at all? I can see these comments are from October 17 however the functionality is still the same. The best thing to do in my opinion is to create a two way link, where the cell can be updated on either sheet and the changes take effect in both.

I have 10 plans, each owned by a different department in the business who have the responsibility of updating it. I have then linked them all into one sheet which I control. Although they should update, occasionally I add comments, new tasks or complete activities on their behalf where they are unable to. Like all the above, this means I have to search in each individual sheet for the right cells to update. This feature I assume by the way SmartSheet works would help a lot of people.

As a workaround, you might use a report to make it easier to update the cells.

    Hope that helps!

    Have a fantastic week!
