Referencing External Sheet Data
Is there any way to reference data in another sheet based on a cell's contents? I have inventories that have asset tags and associated serial numbers. I have a separate sheet for maintenance logging. Is it possible to type in an asset tag and have the corresponding serial number auto-fill in the adjacent column?

I too am looking for a way to publish data from one sheet to another based upon a columns data. For example, if column C on Sheet 1 is "Group A" - auto publish that row to exisiting Sheet 2. If Column C on Sheet 1 is "Group B" - auto publish that row to Sheet 3. and so on.

Is the serial number text or a number?
If the first, not that I know of.
If the second, yes but very limited functionality.
We are all hoping for a MATCH or LOOKUP function.

It's normally both - depending on the manufacturer. Some examples might include:
Z000123456
123412341234
ABW1234
My asset tags are formated as:
ABCD1234
Both the asset tag and serial number are on a row in a specific sheet. It's possible that I could make a master inventory sheet that has all asset tags and related serial numbers (I have different sheets for different venues), so the maintenance list references one sheet instead of 6... I'm just wondering if it's possible to type in an asset tag on the maintenance list and have the SN auto-populate from the asset tag. I know it's possible in Excel but none of the functions that I've tried so far are working....

No. Based on numerous threads here on the Community, this has to be one of the most requested features.
However, there are third party tools that can give you that functionality.
Depending on needs, AppSheet is where I'd start.

Everything Craig has said is correct--we don't currently support MATCH or LOOKUP functions in Smartsheet, but I've added your vote for this to our enhancement request list.

Two years later...still nothing. Pretty much all of our collaborative worksheets are now in Smartsheet. If I try to do anything "advanced" (very basic in Excel) I always run up against this same response: it's not a feature yet, but we've added your vote. The fact that so many basic features are still in development makes me wonder what the developers are even working on. Oh, right, they just released Charts, which is utterly useless (columns have to be next to each other to be used as axes? Why!). I'm almost to the point of installing the Live Data Connector so I can just transfer the data from the Smartsheet and actually do useful analysis/charts in Excel.
