Required Fields on a form

I have created a form someone uses when making a document request.  They have a specified period of time they need to allow for the request to be completed.  If they are requesting something that is urgent, they are required to mark "Yes" on the form I created for the requests.  There is also a field for "Reason for Urgent Request."  I would like that field to be required ONLY if they have indicated that it is an urgent request.  If I mark it required now, it is required for everyone using the form, not just those making urgent requests, which makes the field senseless to those whose request is not urgent.  Does anyone know if you can create a form where a field will only be required if a related field is marked "Yes," or the like?

    Hi Lenore,

Unfortunately, it's not possible at the moment in Smartsheet, but it's a great idea!

Please submit an Enhancement Request when you have a moment.

As a possible workaround, you could use a third-party integration like Google Forms.

    Would that work?

    Have a fantastic day!

  • As Andree said, it is not possible, but if you'd like to know what is the reason behind YES in your form, the possible workaround could be to create automated step sending update request when YES appears in that specific column. Then you can create soome nice message and you'll get the information. Maybe a liitle bit later than if it would be within same form, but at least you have it.

    Or......

Have the field as Required, but have a default value of "N/A" (or something to that effect), and include in the field notes that it needs to be edited if the "Urgent" field is marked as Yes.

That should take care of MOST entries, and then to take care of the stragglers that aren't paying attention you can combine that with a version of Marcin's suggestion with an Update Request sent to the user if Urgent was marked as Yes, but the Reason field is "N/A".

  • You could use logic on the "Is this urgent?" field to display the "Reason for Urgent Request" required field if they choose "Yes" to indicate the request is urgent. If the "Reason for Urgent Request" field is not displayed because they chose "No" in the "Is this urgent?" field, then it is not required to be completed when the form is submitted.
