Slow response from Smartsheet

Is this due to the number of open sheets (5 open tabs), size of sheet, computer processing power, or network speed (25.36 Mbps / 5.78 Mbps download)?

We have noticed dramatic performance improvements using Chrome vs. Internet Explorer (on Windows, of course). The improvement is especially noticeable on older machines. We have noticed that newer, faster processors do help the performance, and so do decent video cards, it would seem.

Your network speed should not be the issue, as we have extremely reponsive sheets with comparable network speeds but on machines with very nice hardware.

    Terry,

I notice the same problem with only one sheet open  (300 rows, 30 columns, >50% of cells are blank).  I am not tapping out my processor or memory, and only have a few open applications.

Network speed is 16.5 down and 10.2up (Mbps)  I am using chrome, and though I do have a column full of hyperlinks, there is no linking to/from the sheet with other sheets.

I sure would like to know how to make it go faster.  If I hold down the arrow key to scroll, there is a noticeable lag.  Surprising to see that there are not more comments about this in the forum.

  • I am also having speed issues.  Especially accessing update requests and deleting update requests.  I'm using Chrome and almost always it takes so long to access or delete an update request, that I get a Page Unresponsive message asking if I want to Kill the action or Wait.  No other programs are bogged down like this.  VERY frustrating!

Smartsheet is VERY slow - Especially if you use Formulas - we had a sheet built for us using several Paid For design desk sessions by Smartsheet and when we tried to use it the sheet ground to a halt

We were told that it was a Browser issue - too many formulas for the browser

Rebuilt it in Google Sheets and no issues - works very smoothly so the issue appears to be with SMartsheet

BTW they have refiused to refund the design desk sessions used to have the sheet built

Hundreds of $$$ down the drain

It also appears to be slow periodically on different computers with different browsers

    - we never experience those issues with other software especially sheet systems like Excel and Google Sheets

    - seems like there is some kind of known issue with smartsheet that they dont want to talk about??

  • I too suffer from the same issues and despite trying different browsers and so forth, we are not seeing any real speed improvements.  The limits it would appear is around 20 rows and 10 columns, any more than this then the performance drop off is dramatic.

Unlike Excel 365/Google Sheets whose performance, to be fair, is pretty impressive for even some complex and heavy demand spreadsheets, Smartsheet is really clunky and becomes desperately frustrating and slow.  It's really embarrassing to collaborate on a Smartsheet when it's so slow - the clients will often complain and in most cases don't use the sheet for anything other than a task list or action log - and for this I can use Excel too!!

It seems that the smart functions of Smartsheet are really very smart, unfortunately the execution is lacking finesse.

Shame, but I'll once again be reconsidering my subscription.

    Thanks

    Rob

This appears to be getting worse and worse.  Even with some sheets I created long ago, the performance seems to be degrading.

I've actually started looking at doing all of my formulas and metrics outside of Smarsheet (in PowerBI) just to see if it will improve the sheet performance.

I have teams all over the world, and already the fact that there are no European or Asian servers for SS makes their access/load/response times awful.  I can only imagine how bad it is for them now if I am seeing a marked decrease in performance here in the US.

  • Very slow for me as well.  Creating sheet with a lot of links and it takes several minutes for the sheet to open when moving between sheets.  Frustrating!

  • I have not used my Smartsheet account for a while, but just re-engaged with it and am frustrated by the same issue as this thread. Other than the comment from 2015 that Chrome works better, is it really true that this has been going on for over two years and is still a problem? My sheet is mostly just a list right now, but it is very frustrating to not be able to scroll at normal speed. I am using a SurfaceBook Pro with Windows 10 and IE (because my laptop will not run Chrome without constant errors - another frustration).

Hoping the scrolling gets improved because long term, users are not going to put with that and look to other solutions.

  • I find there is a huge difference in speed between my company network environment and when I log on from my PC at home. Logged in this morning through our VDI, Smartsheet was impossibly slow. It crashed 10 times in the hour I was trying to update a sheet with 48 columns and a dozen rows, two relatively simple formulas and no vlookups or other outside references.

But when I tried the same thing this evening from home, it was no problem at all. Granted, I'm not using the same browser (MS Edge 41 at home vs the ancient MS Exploder 11 at work), but I find it hard to believe that a browser could make that much difference. It must have something to do with server/firewall settings. Unfortunately, getting my so-behind-the-times IT department to cooperate will be more difficult than just switching the sheet to Excel. It's a shame because there are a lot of great features with Smartsheet. I guess I will have to be content using it as a tracker with minimal columns and formulas.
