Sort columns by color

Hi,

Is there anyway to sort columns by fill color or text color? When we need to draw attention to certain items in Smartsheet In Excel we use color coding to sort. That ensures that the specific criteria requested will be presented on the top...(not all the criteria are the same ex. by date, so conditional formatting won't work).

Thank you

    Hello Ellen,

Currently there isn't a way to sort rows or a column by background color or text color, but I'll add your vote for this capability to our enhancement request list.

Similar to conditional formatting, at this time you can only sort by a certain column criteria such as by date.

  • I would also be interested in sorting by color.  I sometimes use color coding of a "category" column, with the color being the large macro category and the text value for a more specific category.  It gives two dimensions to the categorization with one column.  When using reports, it would be great to be able to sort by both the color of a cell (and possibly other attributes) as well as the cell value.

I would also be very interested in being able to sort by color, i have dates which turn red when expired and i would like those rows to move to the top of the spreadsheet to be noticed. It is extremely important to us that the feature be added! Thanks for listening and taking note of the customer requests.

A O, can you just sort based on if the date is expired? The same criteria you use for conditional formatting could probably be used for sorting.

That would work, but the problem is that there are 2 different dates on the page.

If it sorts by color, any date on the page that expires would turn red and move to the top.

But if i do it by date, i can only make one date (one column) move to the top.

So i still need the sort by color if i want my sheet to work properly.

    Thanks for the help!

  • We do a lot of work in Trello and have become dependent on assigning multiple labels, which are color coded, to our cards.  It provides a very visual display of card states by color.  It seems Card View only supports one color per card and that there is no algorithmic way to set that color (e.g. by conditional formattin).  Is this ture?

  • Hi Dave-- To confirm, we do only currently support one color per card and we don't yet flow row formatting (i.e. cell background color, font size, etc.) into cards. However, it is possible to change the color of the left-hand side of a card with Conditional Formatting. You can do this by setting up a Conditional Formatting rule and choosing a "Task Bar" color from the formatting menu. This applies to bars in the Gantt chart, tasks in the Calendar view, and card colors in the Card View. Hope that helps!

  • Hi Kennedy, thanks for the claification.  I'll give the conditional formatting a try.  I'll keep rooting for you to add more capabilities to your Trello imports.  It would be tough for us to switch at this point, but we would love to use one single tool for card visualization and a more traditional project managment approach where we can establish dependencies between "cards".  Keep up the good work and we will keep checking for new capabilities.

  • would really like the sorting feature by color, when do you think this will be available??

  • Is there a time-line for the sort by color feature?

  • Has there been any update regarding being able to filter by color?
