Sorting by "start date", sorting by "assigned to"

Does anyone have recommendations for how to sort a master sheet by "start date", so that the dates are in ascending in chronological order, and also how to sort by "assigned to".

By Master sheet do you mean a report that is pulling other sheets into one? If so, in the spreadsheet view of the report (master sheet) at the top of the columns when you hover over the column name a little arrow shows up. Click on the arrow and a menu appears. There is a sort option in that list. Once you click on the sort option, another box pops up which is where all you sort option selections are. Select what you want and click OK. You should be able to sort any of the columns in the report that way. I hope this helps.

  • Yeah, I'm getting mixed results with that, mostly because one particular column contains "child" items, so those groups are trying to stay together.  Hmm ... more thinking.

Hi Kelly-- At this time, it isn't possible to "sort out" child rows from their parent rows in sheets, as this could effectively break hierarchy in sheets. One workaround that I've seen some customers use is to create a new report that contains all of the data from the sheet, then sorting the report as desired. Since hierarchy is removed in reports, you should be able to sort the rows as you've described above. Let me know how this works for you!

  • That sounds like a possible solution. Right now, I'm on the $10/mo plan which does not include reporting. Not ready to upgrade yet as we're still assessing how Smartsheet will work as a solution for us.

  • Hi Kelly-- I completely understand! If you'd want the opportunity to try out Reporting before upgrading your plan, feel free to email me at Kennedy.Stomps@Smartsheet.com and I can connect you with our Sales team to see if that's something we can make happen.
