My toolbar has moved to the top instead of being located on the sidebar. How can I move it back? I can't seem to find the setting.

    Hi IFCC,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you don't have control over this as it was part of a Smartsheet release launched today, along with the ability to use Reports to drive Charts.

I'm not sure what "insights" Smartsheet used to determine the demand/appetite for this UI change, but I for one would have preferred them to have spent the time on fixing the system date issue, 30px margins around every dashboard widget, the random auto-fill blank rows or the appallingly random/lacklustre search functionality.

On another point, did you not get a ton of popups and contextual help message alerting you to the change?

  • I have been so happy with Smartsheets in the past year that my company has been using it. This change for the sake of change makes no sense. Outside of having to get used to different placement of tools that I automatically used a hundred times a day, I can't see how this improves the workflow. I would really like to know the thinking behind this. I can't imagine anyone saying "It's great, but I wish the menu bar was at the top of the screen and the comment/attachment icons were on the right." Even if that is the case, how hard would it be to give users the option to keep things as they were or to move them, just as Windows does with its task bar?

Not happy about this at all.

  • I can't say I noticed any notices about updates.

I dislike (very strongly) having the toolbar at the top.

Agree with you completely that moving these common tools around seems to be change for change sake.  But, others may disagree.

I appreciate the ability to "minimize" the toolbar by covering up the File/Alerts& Actions/Forms/Sharing row above the toolbar to provide more room to see content.  However, if you need those other tools (which used to be on the bottom), minimizing the toolbar is useless.

Maybe they could move those tools to the right side, underneath the icons for comments, etc?  Seems wasted space below those icons.

I also wish there was more contrast between the tabs.  The light gray font on light gray background for non-focus tabs makes them hard to read.  I keep multiple tabs open all day and switch between them for different types of work (I work for several different departments).  REALLY MISS THE ABILITY TO CUSTOMIZE THE TAB COLOR!  PLEASE BRING THAT FEATURE BACK, SMARTSHEET!

At least the ribbon isn't as big and obnoxious as Microsoft's.

  • Hi Susan,

To bring some insight to the right icons—this is where we plan on providing entry points for major integrations that you add to Smartsheet. We also, in the future, plan on creating a right panel that slides out for your comments so that you can view them regardless of where you are in the sheet.

As for the tab color, we plan on removing tabs altogether in a future update of Smartsheet so that people can use browser tabs. The downside? No customizable tab colors. The upside? You'll be able to officially have multiple sheets open in multiple browser tabs. We currently don't officially support you having multiple sheets open in multiple tabs/windows, but we will in a future update.

    Hi Shaine,

Thanks for the response -- it is nice to know Smartsheet reads the forums.

Honestly, I think making the tabs all separate browser tabs is a HORRIBLE idea.  The beauty of how Smartsheet works now is it is all contained under a single browser tab and it's easy to switch between sheets.  I realize that only one is active (or open) at a time, but rarely has that been an issue for us.  Maybe other users see it as a big problem?

To me, a much bigger problem is having to keep track of Smartsheet tabs in my browser along with all my other tabs.  Typically, I have about 8-10 browser tabs open for various sites I use a lot.  One of those is Smartsheet.  Within Smartsheet, I have multiple tabs (maybe six or seven) visible at a time so I can switch easily one with another.  If I now have an additional six or seven browser tabs, I'll never know where anything is!

Also, I find that under Chrome, every browser tab creates a separate instance of the application, which eats up memory.  Having multiple instances of Chrome for Smartsheet is going to only add to memory issues.

I'd love to hear if others have different opinions but I can't think of any significant positives from this new feature, at least not for our company.

    Thanks,

    susan

  • Haha, move it back!

OK, I suppose I will adjust.

I too believe this would be a horrible idea, for exactly the reasons you've listed.

  • I agree with the comments above.  The new UI is NOT an improvement and is actually much more difficult to use.  Please provide an option for users to choose where the toolbar is placed.  I am getting MANY complaints from our team!

Too bad.  This was a bad decision.  All the videos are now out-of-date.  The tool bar is not configurable either.  I noticed if you attempt to import (copy/paste) anything from an existing template, the far right edit features disappear.

Oh well - onto Something else.

  • If I wanted the toolbars at the top, I would just use Excel.

I've been searching everywhere for the setting to move my tool bar to the left like in ALL THE VIDEOS.  Every modern monitor is wider than is is tall & it makes complete sense for it to be on the side.

If it was recent change. PUT IT BACK

  • Is there any way to customize the new menu bar?  I want to add the sort tool.

  • I have this problem in Workplace. I sort my groups with symbols to keep them organized in Pin to the top. This is the only workaround I have found.
