What is the "Created by" option supposed to do?

I have used this option for a System column thinking it would automatically populate the email or user name of the person (within my network) who submits a request by web form.  However, all tests by several users of this functionality show the same "email address" - web-form@smartsheet.com when the request hits my smartsheet.

What do I need to do to make the submitter’s email addresses – all of which are already loaded in the Contacts list for my organization – populate in the Smartsheet?

Thanks, P

You can create a custom webform for each user.  Add a contact column in the smartsheet and on the webform.  In the email field on webform (in edit mode) enter the email address as the defaut value and then hide the field on the webform.  This way when that person submits the webform their email address will be entered each time.

  • So it sounds like every user would have a different link to the web form? I don't think we want to go that route.

    Stephanie,

I hadn't thought of that with email addresses. Cool Thanks for the idea!  I'm doing something similar by having a unique form for 5 different groups and defaulting one of the fields to automatically populdate their Group Name. But hadn't thought of emails.

    thanks!

P Robertson - the Created By field shows the user who created each row in your sheet. Because web forms are anonymous and anyone with the web form link can fill it out, Created By will show up as web-form@smartsheet.com on rows created by a web form.

If you want to see who has filled out a web form, consider adding a required field where users can add their name before submitting the form.
