How to auto-populate a status column?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to create a formula that will auto-populate a status.

If column A equals "YES", then the status is green.

If column A equals "NO", then the status is red.

If column A equals "PENDING", then the status is orange.

Can anyone offer assistance?

Hi,

There is IF function you can use for this: IF Function | Smartsheet Learning Center

You can use something like this:

=IF([A]@row = "YES", "GREEN", IF([A]@row = "NO", "RED", IF([A]@row = "PENDING", "ORANGE", "NO STATUS")))

Thank you! That works, but is there a way to get this to populate symbols instead of text? (I'm realizing now I was unclear in my original post).

So instead of spitting back text that reads "green", the status column shows the green circle symbol.

Hi,

If the column format is set up as symbol it should work without need to change anything.

Below is the list of symbols examples that could be used in the formulas:

Star, flag, and checkbox symbols: For these symbols, use 1 for on or 0 for off
- Example: = IF([Status]@row = "Complete",1,0)
Red, yellow, and green light symbols: Use the literal values Red, Yellow, or Green
- Example: =IF([Status]@row = "At Risk", “Red”, "Green")
Priority symbols: Use High or Low
- Example: =IF([Status]@row = "Overdue", "High", "Low")
Harvey Balls: Use Quarter, Half, Three Quarter, Full, or Empty
- Example: =IF([% Complete]@row = 1, "Full", "Empty")
