Does anyone know when Group-by in reports will be supported? If I remember correctly, it should be in this year (2018). Thanks for your advice!
Hi ysuzuki,
I'm not sure what you mean by a "Group-by" feature in reports. Can you elaborate on what you're wanting such a feature to do?
Sorry for my late response. Say, we have a big category - sweets. In there, I have sub-categories, chocolate, cookie, candies. First, I sort by the big category, sweets. Then inside sweets, I sort by sub-categories, cookies, candies, chocolate.
So we group by a big category first, then sort by next categories.
Hope this makes sense. I thought I saw this in improvement roadmap for reporting.
As long as the data in your sheets is labeled as such, with a dropdown column for "sweets" and another for the subcategory (chocolate, cookie, etc.) you can apply a multi-staged sort to a report in order to sort rows by "sweets" then their subcategory.
More information on sorting is available here: https://help.smartsheet.com/articles/504742-sorting-rows
If this isn't what you're referring to, can you further describe how this information would initially be organized in your sheets? How would line items be labeled as "sweets" and "cookie" for example if you're looking for a different way to categorize elements other than using columns in the source sheets?
I see this request has been open for a while, and wonder if there's any progress on it.
In my opinion Smartsheet reports would benefit greatly from the ability to apply a grouping by values in a specific column, per what Access can do: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/create-a-grouped-or-summary-report-f23301a1-3e0a-4243-9002-4a23ac0fdbf3
That way the grouped value can be shown as a heading for the sheet rows that have a matching value, rather than having to repeat that value in each row, which is a waste of space.
Take a simple example:
Item . Month
Widget . January
Wodget . January
Wibble . February
You can then report on that sheet, grouping by Month and the report would show:
Month: January
Widget
Wodget
Month: February
Wibble
As you can see, you now have a lot of room for other useful columns to be show, without the repetitive Month field.
I see that Smartsheet can sort by that, but I don't see a way to call out the grouping as a top label.
While you are at it, please a row count for each Group By as well, so we can easily determine how many rows fall under each grouping. This is really pretty basic reporting functionality. I'm surprised it is no in there already.

I am currently setting up an automation for people to get notified through their email, when they are prompted. But is there a way that they can reply in the email of a comment that will then go to the specific sheet. This way they do not have access to the sheet, but can just comment through email with updates?
Is there a way to revert to the old dashboard look and feel. The new dashboards do not look good at all. There is no way of knowing if there are additional items in the widgets until you scroll over one to learn there is more to it since the vertical bar doesn't show. We have hundreds of dashboards and they will all need…
When i try to send or print the timeline view instead of showing the progression bars like they do on the screen it only send the data entered and not a graph type view to print. Is there a way to do this. I am using a mac platform if that helps.
