Auto populate date column when column is checked off formula

Hello! I need help figuring out a formula for the following...

• 1 - Date Column Title: Handoff Date
• 2 - Dropdown Column Title: Onboarding Progress

Essentially, when the status of the 'Onboarding Progress' reaches "handed off to qualification" and is checked off in the dropdown column...is there a formula that will automatically populate the handoff date? So the date will fill in when that dropdown is checked off.

You could use a Workflow combined with the record date Action.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by workflow and the record the date action?

I think I figured out what you mean but it's not recording the date when I tried it. Could you help me figure out why it's not working?
