It would greatly increase efficiency if we could move attachments between rows by drag and dropping them. Please let me know if this is something that can be added.
I was searching for a way to better organize attachments, but could not find a solution.
At present I can only sort by name or date and the result is a very flat structure.
There appears to be no easy way of grouping documents like a set of folders (document groups) or where I can group documents together in a preferred order, with some delineation between them. I would like to order documents in a sequence, not necessarily by just by date or by document name, but by (for instance) a checklist item order.
Also I note that even after using the current sort options, when I return to the sheet, order goes back to a default order e.g. “by Date” as the default ordering of attachments.
Belo is an example of the ordering or grouping according to a "Gate" review sequence. This is on a row-by-row basis, as each row represents a product development which is being assessed at various times (or Gates)

So the requirements are:
It would be great to have a way to move an attachment that is stored at a row level on a sheet between rows instead of having to delete and reattach.
I was going to suggest this function too. There have been several occasions in which I attach a document to the wrong row. The current process of deleting it and then uploading it again to the correct row would be so much more efficient if one could have the option to copy to or move to another row.
Ugh yes it drives me crazy! A quick drag and drop would be so functional and an easy add.
I may be completely oblivious to something existing for this already. However, may I suggest the ability to rearrange attachments once they have been posted to a row. For our use case here, it makes it a lot easier for clients if their attachments are in chronological order. Which is usually a none issue granted the attachments are uploaded in chronological order, but mistakes are made sometimes and I find myself and our team going back and deleting uploads so they can be re-uploaded in chronological order of the attachments.
We often find that files may be better suited in a different row than what they were originally uploaded in. Is is possible to move files from row to row, rather than having to download, delete, and then reupload.
Ideally one source document is uploaded and then it can be linked/referenced/removed in one or more rows. This maintains one copy and prevents the headache of having multiple copies of the same file over multiple rows.
As a workaround you could create a column called "Attachment(s)" and copy/paste URLs of the cloud docs there.
Agreed the current Attachment tool is a little clunky and difficult to manage.
We would like a way to organize/group file attachments by self defined categories and be able to save the default sorting category so all users have the same default when opening the sheet. When we have multiple attachments saved to a sheet, it is hard find a specific one.
As many others have also posted, it would be a huge time save to be able to drag and drop row attachments between rows (with availability for either a copy+paste or cut+paste function). Additionally, a cell that could be setup to capture the attachments names... similar to how you can with the "Latest Comment".
To add, I have one sheet with ~200 rows, and a second sheet with ~100 rows, corresponding with rows in the original sheet. I can't data mesh /shuttle attachments, so I have created a report pulling in all the respective rows and sorting by a common column ( so instead of A B C A B C, I'm seeing rows as A A B B C C). I then download all attachments from the base sheet to a folder. Then (within the report) I will click on row A from base sheet, look at the file names in the right-hand attachment pane, CTRL+click those files from my download folder, and drag over to the row A from sheet 2. Very tedious and time consuming.
I can currently use this idea in the sheets I am developing. We need to attach "supporting" documents for our plan submittals (row item) but these are sometimes very common between many plans.
I am not worried about overloading a sheet with attachments because on a yearly archival schedule, all the attachments will be removed as they are officially stored elsewhere or are already publicly available online.
Another thought I've had as a potential solution to this issue would be to have a sheet file repository, with files not inherently associated with any row. Then the versioning / updating of the file is handled in one location. Rows (in the attachment pane) could then point to the file in the repository (so rows X, Y, and Z are all pointing to one file) AND this would save space digital storage-wise. If this were implemented, categories, or some means of dividing files in the repository would be needed. I already struggle sometimes on rows with ~15 attachments trying to quickly navigate to and find the needed file.
It would be incredibly helpful to be able to rearrange the order of files that are attached to a Smartsheet sheet. One of our use cases is that we attach renewal orders to a single line in order to keep a history of orders for a particular vendor/product easily accessible. If we want to retroactively add a document further down the list, we currently need to download ALL the attachments, delete ALL the attachments in the sheet, and then reupload all of them plus the additional file in the correct order. This is incredibly cumbersome, but better than having the files be out of order.
It would be extremely beneficial to be able to move attachments from one row to another row with some sort of drag and drop. I can't figure out how to move it other than to download it, delete it, and then reattach it it the row I want it in. Such a pain! We have a LOT of documents that are submitted by users, that then need to be attached to the appropriate location and this is a cumbersome task as it is currently set up.
Please make it possible to move an attachment from one row to another. This would be extremely helpful.
