How to add point values to answers
I have a Smartsheet form that is populating answers from the individuals who fill out the form. The questions are text answers and Yes/No questions and they will all be awarded points. How do I add point values to the answers?

Hi @Htu
I hope you're well and safe!
You could add so-called helper columns with an IF function formula that checks the answer and then add a point depending on if it's correct or not.
Would that work/help?
I hope that helps!
Be safe, and have a fantastic week!

Hello Andree,
Thank you for your response. How do I add a so-called helper columns with an IF function formula?
Thank you for your help!
-
Hi Htu,
Your helper column (you could name it Points) could contain this formula: =IF(Answers@row = Yes, "2",0). Of course, you would have to adjust the formula to match your criteria. But this is a simple version.
There are other suggestions for IF Statements in the Formula Handbook, too.
Hope this helps get you started in the right direction :)

Hi Darla,
Thank you so much for your response.
Say for example, one of the questions is "Are you a health provider?" And the answer of either Yes or No awards you 1 point.
What would that formula be? And how do I add an helper column? Sorry, I am completely new to this and would really appreciate your help.
Thank you!

Is the Question the column name? If so, =IF([Are you a health provider]@row = "Yes", "1", 0)

Happy to help!
Try something like this.
=IF([Are you a health provider?]@row = "Yes", 1)
Did that work/help?

Thank you Darla and Andre for your help! I am new to Smartsheets and appreciate all the help I can get.
Where and how do I add the helper column? Please explain it to me as a beginner. Thank you!!!
-
No worries! We all have been newbies at one point :)
You can add your helper column anywhere. I like to add mine next to the section it is referring. Others put their helper columns at the very end. It's just a personal preference.
Happy to help!

Haha! Yes! 🤣
Also, @Darla Brown & @Htu beware that if you surround numbers with "" it will read as text so they would have to be converted using VALUE if you'd like to sum them together or similar.

Hello,
Thank you Andre and Darla! I added the helper column and the IF formula but it comes out as #UNPARSEABLE.
See screenshot below. What am I doing wrong? Thank you so much for all your help for this newbie!

Remove the word Cencal. It is not in your column name.

I'm always happy to help!
The column name you reference inside the formula is incorrect. It has to match the name.
