Sum function of a parent cell/children cells
Why is the sum of a parent cell also adding the children when its expanded and the children cells are not in the formula?

@JML1963, can you add a screenshot? or expand the question a bit? i'm not understanding your situation.

I want to add a sum of a column. Some of the rows are parents with several children rows, some rows have no children.
When I use the sum function it is adding the parent row (which already is the sum of its children) and also the children rows. So my total is off. I tried to individually select only the cells I want to add but it is including the 'children' rows that are being selected.

If you are summing the entire column or a range of cells with the SUM function, then it is going to add up every cell within the column/range. It sounds like everything is working how it is intended to work. We just need to figure out the proper steps to get you what you actually need. What exactly are you trying to do, and where are you putting this formula in relation to the source data? Are you able to provide screenshots for context?
