Add a random number function, its 2023 and this functionality is basic in spreadsheets and has been around for 30 years. It is really incredible Smartsheets doesnt have this functionality.

A rand() function to generate a random number is REALLY needed, format doesn't matter - just SOMETHING that allows us to generate a random number inside of the program.
I add my vote to this ! a RAND() function would be much appreciated. Is there a way that people in this post could be informed if it is already in the development plans ? Thanks.
Amusingly, the AI thinks smartsheet DOES have rand()! So, "helping" is slightly arguable….
That is funny. If they had just spent the last few year improving the product's core functionality it would have been much better than AI
Our Smartsheet Licensing is going to go up 600%, for a spreadsheet program that doesn't have a random function that their AI lies about. They implemented AI without addressing any of the basic short comings of the platform. Truly amazing.

We have a lot of editors who we are going to have to require licensing according to the new system. I am just going by what they are suggesting and if all editors need to be licensed then 600% is probably low. If there is some misunderstanding of the licensing and they are suggesting that we license these users that we dont need to then that's a bad business on their part. To me the new licensing is clear editors must be licensed. Curious what workarounds you are suggesting other than multiple users on the same email address.

What I look at with my clients is whether all users actually need to have a license for their editing needs. Of course, if they need to create, they need a license, and if they need to edit extensively, I'd recommend they have a license.
Here are some of the possible workarounds that don't require a license.

Hi We do lots of Requests and Forms and heavily use automations already, however a majority of our users have to edit sheets directly because the forms are so basic, for example not being a select an existing row or multiple rows it this case they use check boxes and other fields which then runs an automation which starts an approval flow. This means that anyone who is making a 'request' in our system is an editor, so either we have to change our business practices significantly so that we have a few people making requests (which is still a price increase) for everyone or we pay a lot more for everyone.
As an administrator I dont' have time to explore the add-ons and other features that I think should be included as a core part of the program, Smartsheets isnt the only thing I do. Basically the forms and features are so poor that you need to get an add on and given the quality of the rest of the program I don't have trust the add-ons would work well. At the end of the day it is still a price increase and given the poor quality of the rest of the program we have been starting to migrate. There are lots of open source and other alternatives. We may be forced to true up several users till the end of the year and change our practices anyway.
I say all this also as an API programmer, I needed to improve the quality of the automations. For example you cant create an automation that deletes rows, so I wrote a API call deletes rows from a table. Why? Because you can't create an automation that copies only a Parent row, it always copies the child rows, so I needed to wrie something that automatically deletes the child rows from a 'helper' table where the child records were moved to, because the automations would stop running because the table was too large.
Also because you have to copy all columns when you move rows you cant keep you column and row usage low to you run up against cell/row limitations pretty quickly. I could go on but like I said I have to get back to doing other things.
The google platform does more than Smartsheet and if I need to program anyway it makes sense to spend time and money there.
The core product is too poor to justify all this effort and expense. Case in point this thread is about not having a random function and later the AI lying about it, why in the world would I use an addon made by Smartsheets or anyone? People are going to continue using the program not because it is high quality and value but because they have built infrastructure on it and paying more is easier than hiring someone to retool a bunch of business processes in a different product. I think that is exactly Smartsheets true - up calculation, they haven't done anything but window dressing to improve the program but they are going charge more.
Also on a funny note a survey popped up before I began writing this about how likely I would be to recommend the program to someone else, 0 obviously, but as I was writing I realized the back key didnt work so I couldnt correct anything i had written. LOL 100% on brand for Smartsheets. Its a little sad really if you had improved your product you could have cleaned the floor with your competition given your market share.
Like I said the forms and approval system in too basic to be able to manage without editing the sheet.
Yes, we all want more, and what you're seeing is the start of an improved framework that will provide much quicker releases and more.

Nobody wants workarounds and addons anymore. You need to be directly competitive with alternatives and opensource offerings. Sorry to be a splinter in the heel but someone has to be direct.
