AutoNumber Parent Rows Only

Is there a formula/ methodology to auto number parent rows only, preferably with a prefix style numbering sequence like the Autonumber column type uses?

Try doing a search here in the Community for WBS. I know there are a couple of posts floating around that have WBS solutions which seems like exactly what you are looking for.
