Handling URLs

Hi - searched far and wide, tried several things, coming up empty. We have a use case where a long link to somthing is inserted into a Smartsheet field (nor a form, just a grid). Can click ctl-K and make it to a clickable hyperlink. However, it ends there. We cannot index or join or even copy paste that clickable URL into another sheet. Is there a workaround we can try?

Might also add, we've tried various html syntax within a smartsheet field, but smartsheet interprets it as text, not HTML code.

Do you have any odd syntax in the URL? I have had good luck with Smartsheet picking up URLs automatically.

    Hey @palmcitytim

Can you share the URL by any chance? I have never had problems with URL's in a cell before.

  • Hey @palmcitytim

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're talking about text in a cell with a hyperlink behind the text that points to a URL, versus a URL spelled out in the cell as a full link.

In this case, you're correct - hyperlinked data will only be shown as a hyperlink in the sheet where it was created. You cannot use a formula to reference it and pull it into another sheet because this will just pull the display text and not the underlying link.

That said, if you add in the full URL into the sheet along with the text, like this image, then you can reference the cell in a formula and have the URL be clickable:

    Cheers,

This is good news, I think. You interpreted me well. However, not following your example at end. When I bring over the full http text string, it appears as just that, a strong -- not clickable. I think by your inclusion of "Community", that was entered manually or "+" concat or via join collect perhaps?

Coffee is starting to work. Thank you again everyone. I guess the manual ctl K is the only way to create the clickable link with text of Community Page. I see the alternative on row 1, but we're trying to make our data presentation more palatable.
