The import csv contact list does not seem to be working, is there an issue?

  • Hi @AC725

Thank you for testing! Please capture a screen recording of what you're seeing and contact Support to report this behaviour so they can troubleshoot this with you in a private channel. They'll need to know the type of computer you're working on and the browser version as well.

  • Hi, I am struggling with the same problem. I have tried both of these formats below.

    I am using a Windows PC - Lenovo Flex 5, Windows 11 Home - 16GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 7 5700U

I am not getting an error message, it is just not uploading. When I search for the email address it is not there.

Thanks Genevieve. I will comeback and post the solution once y'all get it solved for me. I'm having the exact same issue as Izelle.

  • Has a resolution for this been noted? I have attempted all the formats as the other users with no success. The Smartsheet logo appears just briefly after selecting Continue (after selecting the .csv file) but nothing happens. There is no import of any contacts. I need to import over 150 contacts and would prefer to not have to do this individually.

When can we expect a resolution?

  • I GOT IT TO WORK!

In your .csv file - REMOVE the SPACE in the heading titles like this

COLUMN A - "First Name" change to "FirstName"

COLUMN B - "Last Name" change to "LastName"

    COLUMN C - should only have "e-mail"

Once I did that - the import was successful!

HOPE this helps those of you still struggling with this issue.

    HAPPY FRIDAY!

  • @Genevieve P. - I'm having the same symptoms/outcomes as others in this thread. I've tried all the different combinations and it still isn't working. Trying rule out anything I can think of...

    • Are the columns allowed to have special characters or blank fields?
    • Can First Name/Last Name contain numeric characters?
    • Is there a character limit to each of the columns?
    • Do any of the columns have case sensitivity?
    • Is font formatting having an impact? Wouldn't think so because csv, but stranger things have happened.
      • Does it only have to be in Arial 9pt or can it be Calibri 11pt?
      • Does that matter if it's edited/created outside of Excel?@debra.brahler

I noticed, in the Managing Contacts help article, that the first column (First Name) is left-aligned while the other two (Last Name and Email Address) are center-aligned:

Would it be easier/clearer to have this as the example? First Name,Last Name,Email Address

I've been trying to get this to work for hours and I'm grasping at straws. Thanks in advance.

    I'm using a Dell Latitude 5520, i7, 32GB RAM, Win10 Ent, 22H2, Chrome 118.0.5993.89, Ad-blocking disabled, and Dark Reader turned off.

@debra.brahler - was there any other kind of formatting applied to the column headers or columns? (ex - bold-facing, borders, center-alignment, etc)

How about when you edited it to remove the spaces? Did you use Excel, N++, notepad, Sublime, or something else?

Any additional info might help and I appreciate everyone's suggestions.

  • Hey all,

Thanks for posting your solutions as you're getting it to work for your specific computer types! In general, the column headers of:

    First Name
    Last Name
    Email Address

Should work, or if not, try this alternative:

    Email Address
    Name

Yes, these are case-sensitive, so make sure that there are no extra spaces or capitalizations etc. Another thing to note is the content of the Emails or Names as well - ensure there are no special characters (such as &) as that can block the bulk-upload from working correctly.

If neither of these headers or formats have worked for you, and you can confirm that the Names and Emails contain all regular characters (except . and @), then please reach out to the Support team with the following information:

    • Computer type
    • Browser types tested
    • Headers tested (screen captures)
    • A copy of the CSV file with the emails (to check for odd characters)
    • and if possible, a HAR file as well (see here).

    Thanks,

    Genevieve

  • Thank you @Genevieve P.!

Removing all the & from my .csv is what did it for me! I finally successfully uploaded all my contacts. Thank you for your help and support. I appreciate it!

  • I have had success with the same format as the export (Email Address,Name) BUT, it will not take 1,000 entries as advertised. In fact, it will not take 750. I am not sure of the max, but I have successfully imported 200.

Hello! Has this been resolved or is there a workaround that actually works. I have tried all of the suggestions (except Google Sheets as my company has that blocked) above and we are still having the issue of being unable to fully import. The contacts can be used in a sheet, but only if you type in their name...they do not populate into the dropdown list or into the "My Smartsheet Contacts" list. I even manually deleted all contacts in my contacts list and tried to reimport with no luck.

  • Hello Everyone...

Do we have a solid solution for this yet? I've tried everything that anyone has recommend in the thread and still no successful upload.

I had the same issue and noticed that when I removed a contact I added "unassigned un.assigned@company.com" I was able to upload my contacts.

  • Good morning, I have read and tried every idea in this thread except for the google sheets export. Nothing works.

I am convinced importing contacts is still an issue.

I used (Email Address | Name) format and got it to work. The trick was that I had to remove extra space(s) after everyone's name
