if you go into your personal settings, you can change the language/country to English (Australia) - that setting displays dates as day/month/year.
Account > Personal Settings > Profile > Language (Country)

Good answer Sandee! Just a note - selecting whichever country you are in will set the date format to whatever is used in that country (Adrian, you can select the United Kingdom rather the Australia).
