Can you bulk link columns?

I know you can bulk link multiple rows by selecting them all during the linking process.

Does this not work the same way with columns?

Thank you,

Cam

If you mean using "Link from Cell in Other Sheet" then yes, you can select multiple columns, right click, choose "Link from Cell in Other Sheet" and select multiple columns in the other sheet.

When I select multiple cells across columns to link, only the first selection actually links.

    Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

    Hey @camr

The way I would do this is first right-click on the starting cell that you want to link into. Then in the pop-up window, select the cells either across one row or across a range that you want to link.

In my example, I've selected the first cell in the Primary column as the one to Cell Link in, then in my range I've selected all the cells from Name1 to F3:

This then links in all 12 cells in the same order:

    Cheers,

    Genevieve

Thank you! I was trying to link a set of rows from a summary to a master sheet.

Seems that doesn't work, but when it's columns in a summary sheet, it does.

Columns to columns, rows to rows.

    Thanks,

    Cam

  • Not sure if I've figured out the ultimate workaround but here goes… I've had this issue with the functionality of smartsheet for 4 years since using it for project scheduling.

    1. First create you main schedule sheet, enable dependencies and durations
    2. Add a customer column called estimated duration in days (important its in days)
    3. Create an resource allocation column in this example I'ved used full time equivalent (FTE) but equally valid would be allocation in % etc.

    Now comes the magic…

    1. create a separate sheet call it something like resource calculator or something
    2. Now under the same column headings select the column cells right click and hit link from cell in other sheet
    3. Now select the same column from the sheet above and after a refresh you'll see your data appear
    4. Do this for Primary Column, estimated duration, allocated FTE
    5. In the fourth column create a formula to adjust your task duration based on the allocation column, in my example I just divided the estimated days by the FTE to get the true duration based on resources

    Back to the first sheet.

    1. Now just simply select the Duration column in your schedule and then right click and select link from cell in other sheet and select the column of cells in your resource calculator for calculated duration.
    2. Boom, now all you have to do is just update your main schedule when you need to either adjust the estimated duration, or the allocation of resources and after a few seconds your task duration will automatically update
    3. Unfortunately you can't link more than 1 empty cell so if you want to allow for the addition of more tasks in your schedule my suggestion is to just bulk enter a fullstop/period in your task column estimated duration and allocation to so you can setup the automated links in your resource calculator so you basically never need to open that up again.

Hopefully this works for y'all until smartsheet finally corrects this bug cough addresses this longstanding feature request.
