Why does a new sheet contain pre-populated column headings
When I create a new sheet, it always includes the first 9 columns pre-populated with column headings. Can this be changed? It adds additional time to have to change/remove these.

Just reuse them - double click header and make them what you want them to be.
If you'd like to ask for a change to that functionality, though, then submit a Product Idea (click at the top of community) for it.
You might also start seeing some changes…Smartsheet is redoing how people create solutions and focusing much more on templates and preset items, and less focused on their current default sheet, project, task, card templates. So, this might change for the better for you anyway, but it's always good to suggest ideas on Product Ideas.
