AutoPopulate Child Rows

Hello -

I have Parent rows with a couple key identifiers I want to use for reporting (Change #, Change Assignee).

For a given "Change", I add child rows for each task under that change. If I want to report on the individual tasks, they need to have some of the same information that is in the parent row.

Is there a way to "autopopulate" certain columns when creating a child row under a parent row?

If I add 3 child rows under the parent row for "Change123", can all of the child rows automatically fill in "Change123" in the Change# column?

Can you just use =PARENT(Change@row) as a column formula in the Change# column ?

If I make that formula a column formula, then it tries to apply itself to all of the parent rows as well, and then turns them blank.

You would need to add a so-called helper column for it to work as a column formula.

Thanks for the quick responses! Could you elaborate on how to do this?

@MaaikMeijerink I would like to use the Parent() formula as a column formula, but have logic embedded that only applies to child rows. I can't figure out how to make a Parent formula a column formula without it making all of the Parent rows in that column blank.

So I am looking for a formula I can apply to an entire column that does something like:

IF the row is a child row, apply the Parent() formula

IF the row is a parent row, do nothing
