=today() =invalid function?

i have entered this formula and it keeps saying #invalid formula

=IF(TODAY() < [Column2]@row, "past due", "")

Pretty much cut and pasted it from the smartsheet help file. The column is in text/number format.

I don't understand why the formula is invalid. Thanks in advance for the help!

Is [Column2] set as a date type column? If so, exactly how is it being populated?

column2 is set to text/number and i changed it to date and the formula worked. Thanks!!!!
