Struggling with Dependencies and Lead Time Calculations - What Are Helper Columns?

I read a lot about Helper columns. What are these? I want formulas in my Start date, but as soon as I enable dependencies it breaks.

I am also trying to create a lead time based on due date - creation date but unable to get this to work as well.

A helper column is simply a column that you insert into your sheet to help functionality usually through formulas.
