TIME Function - Which Time Zone?

✭✭✭✭✭
edited 12/03/24 in Formulas and Functions

I've been looking thru all of the posts regarding the TIME function and can't seem to find where it stated where the time is pulling from. Is it the user's PC time? Is it always Pacific time since that is the Smartsheet default time? How is the time change twice per year addressed?

How does a company make sure that any times captured are always in the same time zone and valid to use to calculate time durations?

Answers

  • The time is pulling from your Smartsheet account. Go to your account on your bottom left side panel (it's the little person icon). Then select Personal Settings , then Settings. From there you can adjust your time zone.

Thank you for the clarification. A follow-up question…in the case of an entire organization, it would be possible that everyone has their time zone set differently and calculating time durations between an activity that person #1 in one time zone starts but person #2 in a different time zone finishes would be inaccurate, correct?

Or is there a global setting for Smartsheet at the sys admin level that disable everyone's local setting to keep all of the times captured in the same time zone?

    Hi @GMichal,

As the TIME function references a time_value, the time zone it uses will depend on the time_value being used in your formula.

For example, =TIME(9, 30, 15) returns 9:30:15 AM. In this case, it’s not based on anything other than the numbers inside the function. But if you’re referencing another time value, it will depend on the cell you’re referencing. Take a look at this help article for information about the time zones that will be used for different cells/column types: Troubleshooting: How Smartsheet handles time zones.

    Hope that helps!
