I got an error message saying Unable to create cross-sheet reference, because this sheet already contains the maximum number of different cross-sheet references. How do I get around this?

    You've hit one of Smartsheet’s built-in limits

You may know this already, but a single sheet can only contain up to 100 distinct cross-sheet references.

    • Every unique cross-sheet range you create counts toward that 100-reference limit.
    • Even if you're referencing the same source sheet, each distinct reference range (e.g., a different column or range from that sheet) counts separately.
    • You can reuse existing references, but creating new ones will trigger that error.

I have not hit this one in a while, and I'm not sure how you are using them, but here is one possible workaround:

Reuse an existing reference instead of creating a new one.

    • Click into a cell with an existing cross-sheet formula
    • Copy the reference name inside the formula (e.g., {ReviewAreas_Range} or {LabelSummary_Range})
    • Use that name in new formulas instead of creating a new reference via the UI

This allows you to use the same range in multiple places without consuming more slots.
