Approval Request to Same Contact with Two Conditions to Personalize the Message Based on Role

I want to send an Approval Request to a contact, but have two versions of the email, based on the value in a cell. So, set this up:

The trigger is a change in the approval status of the person approving a contact before sending to this person (Finance). Then, when this is triggered, I want to send one of two versions of the message, based on the value in [Role]. No matter which is sent, the status should be updated in thesame column in the sheet ([Approval Status (Finance)]. I set it up so the save status values are the same.

However, I am getting a message that even though its the same approval to the same person just two different versions of the message (based on [Role], I have to have different columns or different status values.

Is this true? Is there a workaround to personalize the message sent to the same person dependent on the value in the [Role] column?

So I've also had this with approval loops but regardless of who you are sending the approval loop to they are both carrying out a different type of approval…if you see what I mean so you will need a separate approval column for each version of the approval loop.

You could use these approval columns as helper columns for an overall Finance Approval Column which could be controlled by a nested if formula based on the responses you have for the two approval columns? Sorry I can't be more specific about what that nested if formula looks like without a bit more info. Let me know if you think that is feasible though and happy to try to help you with it if you would like? just @ me in your response so I get a message.

@Gillian C Thanks for your response. I thought about using the Helper column approach as well. It doesn't seem to me to be separate approvals, it's one approval with two conditional pathways. But, I guess that is just a different way of thinking than how the Smartsheet people are thinking.
