Checkbox only at parent level

I want to add a DONE column with a checkbox but I only want the checkbox to be visible at the parent level not at the child level. I have a helper column created but how do I hide the checkboxes at the child level?

There is actually quite a bit of info that I only want to track at the parent level the child info is relevant for the build but all has to be completed before a status is complete - for example:

The parent is highlighted in blue….I want to show due dates …status check boxes, only at the parent level…. all the rest is just details needed to buildd the audience but it is done together - we have counts for each seperately….. hope that makes sense.

The current workaround for this is to make the checkbox column not restricted to checkbox only and insert text into the child rows. To do this you can create a helper column that identifies the row as a parent or child row. The best explanation for this workaround can be found here.
