The Smartsheet MCP Server is now generally available — and we're excited to see what you build with it.
If you've ever wanted to ask an AI tool a question about your live Smartsheet data and get an intelligent answer back, that's exactly what this enables. The MCP Server is an open integration layer built on Anthropic's Model Context Protocol standard. Connect your Smartsheet account to any MCP-compliant AI tool and start querying your projects in natural language.
A few examples of what you can do: "Which tasks are overdue in Project X?" "Summarize risks across my portfolio." "Update the status on row 247 to complete."
The AI tool gets full context — row relationships, column types, cell history, comments — so responses are meaningful, not generic. And because it's built on the same REST API you may already be working with, your existing API knowledge transfers directly. It's also built with proprietary data optimization that compresses and filters what gets sent to your AI tool — meaning faster responses and lower token costs as your usage grows.
It's also not limited to one AI tool. The MCP Server works with any MCP-compliant client — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or custom enterprise platforms, open-source agent frameworks, internal copilots. One endpoint, same security model, no vendor lock-in. If you've already connected Smartsheet to Claude through the integration released March 2 — the MCP Server is the open platform behind it, now available for every MCP-compliant tool.
For developers building custom integrations: the MCP Server eliminates bespoke authentication flows, manual data serialization, and fragile API wrappers for every new AI tool your organization adopts. One integration layer, every MCP-compliant client connects.
On the business side, this changes how teams interact with project data. Instead of building dashboards or chasing PMs for status updates, leadership gets contextual answers from live data directly. Risks surface before they escalate, approved actions happen in the conversation, and it's all governed by org-level controls. Less time reporting, more time doing.
To get started, you'll need a Smartsheet Business or Enterprise plan and an MCP-compliant AI tool. If you're using Claude, you can connect directly through Settings > Connectors. For other tools, use the MCP Server endpoint with OAuth 2.0 or a personal access token.
