COUNTIFS - count the number of dates that fall within one month

Question

Hi Community!

Hoping you can assist.  Can you tell me what is wrong with this formula for counting how many publications that fall within one month?

=COUNTIFS(  [Publication Date]:[Publication Date], >=EOMONTH(TODAY(), -1) + 1,  [Publication Date]:[Publication Date], <=EOMONTH(TODAY(), 0)  )

The date in the Publication Date column is formatted as an example:  30-Sep-2026

The issue is that Smartsheet doesn’t support EOMONTH. You can replace the formula with DATE-based logic like this:

=COUNTIFS(

[Publication Date]:[Publication Date], >=DATE(YEAR(TODAY()), MONTH(TODAY()) - 1, 1),

[Publication Date]:[Publication Date], <=DATE(YEAR(TODAY()), MONTH(TODAY()), 0)

)

A couple of things to note with the above formula.

In Smartsheet, setting the "day" as zero in a DATE function will throw an error.

MONTH(TODAY()) - 1 works when in any month other than January where it will fail.

That formula is counting the previous month, but based on your original formula, it looks like you are wanting to count for the current month. If that is correct, this is what I would suggest:

=COUNTIFS([Publication Date]:[Publication Date], AND(IFERROR(MONTH(@cell), 0) = MONTH(TODAY()), IFERROR(YEAR(@cell), 0) = YEAR(TODAY())))

If you want previous month that also works in January:

=COUNTIFS([Publication Date]:[Publication Date], AND(@cell >= IFERROR(DATE(YEAR(TODAY()), MONTH(TODAY()) - 1, 1), DATE(YEAR(TODAY()) - 1, 12, 1)), @cell < DATE(YEAR(TODAY()), MONTH(TODAY()), 1)))
