It would be valuable if Smartsheet Forms could trigger the creation of a new sheet from a predefined template or configurable sheet structure.
Use case: standardising project plans
In an enterprise environment, we often need to capture mandatory project setup information through a form before work begins. This ensures consistency around key fields such as project name, owner, department, client, start date, governance requirements, and reporting needs.
However, once that initial information is captured, users often still need a working sheet where they can add more detail, build out tasks, timelines, dependencies, risks, owners, and delivery milestones.
A useful enhancement would be the ability for a form submission to automatically generate a new sheet, using either:
- a selected template
- a conditional template based on form responses
- a configurable structure defined by the form owner
For example, a user could submit a “New Project Request” form and, based on their answers, Smartsheet could automatically create the appropriate project plan sheet with the relevant columns, default rows, formulas, automations, and permissions already in place.
This would help organisations:
- Standardise project initiation
- Reduce manual setup effort
- Improve governance and data quality
- Ensure required information is captured upfront
- Guaranteed sheet summary reporting consistency
- Give users a ready-to-use sheet for detailed planning
- Support scalable project and portfolio management processes
This would be especially useful where organisations need both structured intake and flexible project planning, without relying on manual sheet duplication or admin intervention each time a new project is created.
