question about countifs

I'm trying to count the number of checkmarks for departments. Essentially, for this screenshot, the Academy project has people from different departments participating. I want to know how many people from each department are working on it--a count of each. That way, when I add more people to the project, the total counts across departments will increase.

Is there a way to automate this? I've tried countifs, OR, AND, etc, and nothing works. Thank you!

Try this:

=COUNTIFS(Department:Department, "CTWS", Academy:Academy, 1)

=COUNTIFS(Department:Department, "Legal", Academy:Academy, 1)

and so on... one for each column you are using to sum the # of check boxes.

=COUNTIFS($Academy$1:$Academy$211, 1, $Department$1:$Department$211, $Departments$2)

I have a Pro plan but I cannot create ANY reports. The system does not allow me to choose a folder, and consequently a sheet to create a row report and suggests an upgrade to Business or Enterprise.
