Sort Row is Gray

Hi Jeffrey,
You cannot sort if you have filters applied to your sheet. Do you have a filter applied? Try this, right click on a column header and select Remove All Filters, then try and sort your sheet.
Let me know if you are still having trouble sorting!

Jeffrey,
Also, an editor can't sort if there are locked row/columns, I believe.
Given your symptoms, the filter is the likely culprit.

Wow the filter solution worked thank you very much.

This is a SERIOUS shortcoming - you can't sort when filtered?
When managing a worklist, completed items should be marked "Complete" then be filtered out of that list. We stil then wish to sort date.
SmartSheets: please add this to your upgrade list.

I agree with 100% with Peter Bryn. SmartSheets: please add this to your upgrade list.

Hi All—
I realize that this is an older thread, but I wanted to mention that we now have a new way to filter sheets.
Although you still can't sort AFTER applying a filter (we've got your votes for that down on our enhancement request list), you can save a filter, then disable to sort and enable the saved filter. Details on this are available in our Help Center: https://help.smartsheet.com/articles/504659-using-filters-to-show-or-hide-sheet-data
One caveat to sorting in a sheet is that if you save, the sort is permanently applied and can't be undone. If you're looking for a way to safely sort sheet content without the risk of permanently changing the structure of the sheet, create a report: https://help.smartsheet.com/articles/522214-creating-reports

Shaine:
Thanks for the reply; I would add to this request not just a static, one-time sort, but one that is applied real-time (e.g. after updates to the sort column(s)). That way once I update the due date on something, it is applied automatically. Pretty standard stuff.
Tks.

Thanks Peter, I've passed your feedback for a continuous sort along to our Product team as well.

Thank you J Craig Williams
I have an editor who cannot share and I have locked the top 5-10 rows and 2 columns. @ Smartsheet - I am curious why he cannot sort the data. The lock feature is to prevent users from changing key data but should not impact the sorting. Please add this to your list of improvements. Thanks

Hi James, I'll get your vote down for Editors to have the ability to sort locked rows.
-
Okay, I've cleared all filters and unfroze all columns and still "Sort Rows" is grayed out. Any other suggestions?
-
Hi John,
It's possible that you're selecting child rows across different hierarchies, or you're trying to sort locked columns (not sure if you mean't that the columns were "unlocked" versus "unfrozen").
Hierarchies: You'll need to select from parent row to parent row, as opposed to selecting a child in one hierarchy and a child in a different hierarchy.
If the above isn't the case for you, contact our Support team (support@smartsheet.com) so they can troubleshoot further.

Thanks Shaine! I think I figured it out. The owner of the sheet has locked certain columns from being edited, the one I'm trying to sort on being one of them.
-
James, I agree, not being able to sort when some there are locks doesn't appear to serve a purpose.
Can anyone clarify the reason?
Roland
