Card View - Selecting View By Lanes
I want to select a certain column from my sheet to be the "view by" lanes. I only have a choice of a handful of columns, none of which are very useful to me.
The column I want is available to add to each card via "fields" but not in the "View by" selection. The columns I want either contains an equation/calculation and or traffic lights (red/yellow/blue/green)
Is there a reason why I cant use them as lanes?

Hi Luisa-- The design of the Card View is such that only Dropdown-type columns can be selected from the "View By" list. This is because the Card View populates the column/lane headers with the contents of the Dropdown column's pick list. I've added your vote to support the ability to include Symbol-type columns (like the RYG balls) in the View By list to our enhancement request list. Our developers will consider this for a future update. We appreciate your input!

Good monring.
I think this is a great tool to have at our fingertips. I have many customers who are visual thinkers, so this is awesome! That said, I'm glad to see others are struggling with this issue, as well. I wanted to view by Assigned to and realized after studying the tips page that I needed to change my column to a drop down, which I did. However, I still am unable to see that column in the View by drop down.
Am I missing a step? Thank you for your continued support!

Hi Laurie-- Are you still running into an issue with this column not appearing in your View By list? You may want to try saving your sheet, then checking the View By dropdown again. If you're still having an issue, feel free to share your sheet with me at Kennedy.Stomps@Smartsheet.com with Admin permissions and I'll be happy to look into this further.

Thank you. Yes, I'm still having the issue. The sheet in question is linked from another sheet. The main sheet works fine showing the dropdown I want, but the linked sheet doesn't. Is there a limit to how many drop downs lists the "View" will show? And if there is, it would be great if we could pick and choose which ones we could see.

Hi Laurie-- Thanks for sharing your sheet with me! I've responded via email to troubleshoot further

Thank you so much for helping me with this!

I was having the same issue with my assigned column. I was able to see it as a lane if I switched the field type from Contact List to a dropdown. Does that mean that I can't take advantage of a Contact List as a lane?

I was pretty excited to see Card View since we've abandoned Trello in favor of SmartSheet. Sadly, I can't view what's assinged to me since I can't view by that column. If I could, I would be thrilled to death.

Hi Susan and Brandon-- At this time, we don't support using a Contact List-type column as a View By column in Card View for technical reasons but this is something our Card View team is considering for a future update and I have added your votes for this feature!

Thanks for the info, Kennedy. I would probably use the Card View almost exclusively if I could see what's assigned to me since I really like that view style. As it is, it's not very useful to me.

Agree that we need to a card view for categorized by Assigned To. This allows each person on the team to see what they have to do. Please add my vote to get this done.

Luisa mentioned columns with "traffic light" symbols, which I would also love to see in card view! It would be amazing if we could "view by" any symbol column, which are already similar to a drop-down where they have a limited set of options. (It wouldn't matter for my purposes if the headings on the card lanes displayed the symbols themselves or the equivalent text.)
Right now I've been testing with a workaround by making a second column set as a drop-down menu, with a formula to update along with the symbol column but as text. So "$$" becomes "Price Level 2" and I can then sort my cards, but it's clunky.
I could also definitely make use of sorting by an "assigned to" column for my team project dashboard, so +1 to that concept (although I could see how it might get out of hand with a larger set of contacts).

Dear all,
I used the following approach to tackle this:
1) Add text columns of same name for e.g if there is a mood column add a moodtext column
2) Set the value of the moodtext column to be of the mood column using (=mood)
3) Complete this formula for all the cells
4) Right-click on column and change the type of the column from text to dropdown list
Now the new column will be available for lane

Came here looking for the same thing as the OP, ability to select lanes in card "view by" Symbols (ie: RYG balls).
I am surprised these fields were omitted since they are dropdowns and disappointed that 3 months later they have still not been implemneted. This should be viewed as an oversight, not a feature request.
I don't want to have to create a new column just for lanes in card view when it exists as a symbol. When will this be available?

Hi Ken-- This is something that our Card View team is considering for a future release and I'll add your vote for it to our enhancement request list! I don't have a release date for this functionality at this point.
