Unable to use a simple formula in the "Assigned To" (Contact) column

I have a project schedule that looks something like this:

Row | Task        |    Assigned To

1      | Task1      |    Name1

2      | Task2      |    Name2

3      | Task3      |    Name3

4      | Task4      |    Name1

5      | Task5      |    Name1

6      | Task6      |    Name2

Once I assign Task1 to Name1 in Row 1, I want Task4, Task5 to change to whatever Name1 is.

So I use the formula =[Assigned to]1 in rows 4 and 5 and it keeps getting erased and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?
