Limit to Dropdown values?

Hi, I recently tested the limit and it is 20,000 exactly setting the dropdown options using the API.

Are we saying that the limit is 20,000 dropdown items (no more than 4,000 characters each) or no more than 20,000 characters and spaces in the dropdown list?

The reason that I ask is that I am having an issue in a Smartsheet intake form where the required input is a dealer name that is used in some INDEX/MATCH formulae as well as some Data Mesh logic. We seem to be struggling with the concept of the requestor looking in our ERP system for the complete and accurate dealer name to be used in the request; not just a portion of the name because "everyone knows what I meant".

I was hoping to create some type of lookup list that fed into the dealer name field in the intake form and guided the requestor to the proper name (not possible) but adding all of our dealer names to the dropdown list might help resolve the issue as well...other than having to keep that dropdown list up-to-date.
