Is it possible to populate fields in Smartsheet from a 3rd Party application?

I've got a situation where we'd like to pull in some real-time data from our ERP system into a Smartsheet where we are doing some further tracking as things progress from month to month. From some light research, it seems as though an API could work for us, but I'm not too familiar with that and what our options might be there. If we have a unique identifier in the Smartsheet sheet (i.e. Sales Order Number) to pull up the same data in our ERP system, then I'd like to populate another 'locked' column in the Smartsheet sheet with the Sales Order Amount. That way we don't have to maintain another S/O Amount field in Smartsheet that has to be verified with the ERP system for correctness.

Is that an option?
