Actually, that's a good point.
It was my understanding that this specific feature is due to be revealed/announced during the Engage conference, which is happening today. I would wait to try this feature out until tomorrow, just in case there is a setting that needs to be changed today for this to be live, as @Andrée Starå noted.
If you're still getting an error tomorrow, that's when I'd suggest reaching out to Support.

Hi Genevieve,
I created a support ticket for this with a lot of screenshots :D
BTW when tapping in a formula today, Smartsheets gave a pop-up window with the hint to use a column variable. So i'v tried it instantly :)

As an update, our Support team has confirmed that this error message is an issue that occurs if your regional settings require the use of semi-colons in formulas. The Engineering team is aware of the issue now and will be investigating it.
In the meantime, you can either continue to use formulas as you were before (using drag-fill down a column), or if you wanted to set a formula as a Column Formula, you can follow these steps:
- Set language preferences to English (United States).
- Navigate to the account bubble in top right corner of the Smartsheet home page > Personal Settings > Settings > Regional Preferences dropdown
- Sign out of Smartsheet account and back in
- Create cell formula
- Right click formula and convert to column formula
- Change language preferences back to primary language
- Sign out of Smartsheet account and back in
Thanks!
Genevieve

Hi Genevieve, Thanks for the feedback, changing my region did help, thanks for the tip. I'm glad I could help to improve Smartsheet.

Hello, I confirm that the change to English (United States) corrects the bug. Thank you !

Hi all,
(@Sébastien TOUSSAINT, @Hilbert Kok, @Rudy Moons)
Just a quick note to let you know that our Product team has pushed an update to Smartsheet columns and formulas that use ; instead of , are able to be implemented as Column Formulas!
Cheers,
Genevieve

I have the same issue when I try to convert to column formula with the join / + formula to concatenate information. Is there any advice please?
=JOIN([Your First Name]2:[Your Surname]2, " ")
=[Your First Name]@row + " " + [Your Surname]@row
Thank you

I hope you're well and safe!
Try a simple formula and set it to Column Formula and then edit the Column Formula with what you really need.
Did that work/help?
I hope that helps!
Be safe and have a fantastic weekend!
