Text only format for alert messages

Apologies...new to Smartsheet and I see that I likely put this into the wrong community...looking to see how I can move it to the Using Smartsheet forum.


Hi: I am trying to send alerts using email to text addresses for contacts listed in a contact column for each row. The alert is set to 'includes message only,' as shown below:

Instead of receiving the message body only in the text message, I'm getting the rich email formatting content:

Is there a way to remove rich formatting from alert messages so that only the message body text is delivered?

Or...I have started to evaluate Zapier SMS integration with Smartsheet. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow the trigger to be set more specifically...what we need is for the alert to go out in text when a smartsheet column for a row = X and the date listed in another column for that row = today. Is Zapier SMS integration with Smartsheet capable of doing this / am I missing what Zapier can do?

    We can probably parse it in Zapier.

    Where do you see the rich text?

    Also, I think we can set the trigger more specifically.


    Can you describe your process in more detail and maybe share the sheet(s)/copies of the sheet(s) or some screenshots? (Delete/replace any confidential/sensitive information before sharing) That would make it easier to help. (share too, andree@workbold.com)

    Please let me know after reading my responses below if you would still like me to share a sanitized copy of the sheet.

    The smartsheet is very large, but to simplify, we have the following:

    Course: text column

    Start Date: date column

    Start Time: text column

    Coach: contact column

    Coach status: dropdown column

    Cell-Email: contact column...this column contains the cell to text email address for the coach's cell phone number


    We have an automation set up as follows:

    Trigger: When Coach Status changes to Confirmed

    Alert someone:

    Send to contacts in a cell: Cell-Email

    No subject line

    Includes message only

    Body of message is:

    Reminder:

    Course: {{Course}}

    Date: {{Start Date}}

    Time: {{Start Time}}

    The above message is emailed to the coach's email to text address, so that it is received as a text message on their cell phone.

    Instead of receiving a basic, text only, 4 line text message, they are receiving this as their text message:

    You can set it up differently so you can filter it through Zapier.

    Where are you based? The included SMS service is only available for the USA and the UK at the moment, but there are other options as well.

    Would that work?

    That would be great! I'm in the US. I started looking at Zapier today, setting up an account and created my first Zap, linking Smartsheet and Zapier SMS.

    When I was creating the Zap, after selecting Smartsheet as the app & event, I selected Updated Row as the trigger, but there wasn't any further granularity to it...I couldn't identify that the specific trigger should be when the Coach Status column in Smartsheet changes to 'Confirmed' to be the trigger.

    Additionally, there didn't appear to be any way to identify that the text should be set to a column containing the coach's cell phone number in each row. I've been searching Zapier's site for better documentation on how to do this, but what I'm finding so far illustrates what I've already tried. Is this an issue with my currently using a free Zapier account?

    How should this all (Smartsheet and Zap) be set up differently?

    Yes, you'd need a paid plan, so you can add a filter to be able to select when the updated row should "trigger".

    Maybe it would easier if we schedule a quick meeting?

    Thank you again for your help with this. I found the primary issue to be that we were using Zapier's SMS service, which is basic only and doesn't provide the ability to do what we needed. We are in the process of establishing a plan with Avochato, which will integrate with Smartsheet via Zapier; as we understand, Avochato (via Zapier) will allow us to trigger the sending of text messages off of a change to a specific column in Smartsheet.

    We'll be testing this set up next week.
