Predecessor
Hi Team,
Please find the below screenshot I want to get driving predecessor 2 in row number 5
- Is there any way to check End date in rows number 1, 2 & 3 because predecessor mentioned 1, 2 & 3 in predecessor column then get the number of row in driving predecessor which row has max date.
- I have added 2 in driving predecessor because 2 will be End on 17 May 2021 then row number 5 task can start.
- So we can analysis row 5 task is dependent on row 2.

It looks like that's exactly how it is working in your screenshot...

Hi Paul,
Thank you for response, I have manually entered this values for explaining. I want automate it through formula.
Formula should be work in Driving predecessor column
-
If you turn on the sheet dependencies, the predecessors column should work the way you need it to. Formulas will not work in any column referenced by dependencies.
-
Sheet dependencies already enable. It requires Start Date, End Date, predecessor , Duration & % complete for sheet dependency. I have added one extra column Driving Predecessor where I want to see expected result as I describe on my first post.
I want to use a formula where i can see current task is dependency on which rows when multiple predecessor assign for any of the task.
See row 5 - Predecessor set 1 , 2 & 3, It should be dependent on predecessor 2 because it has greater finished date than two others.
-
What is the maximum number of predecessors you anticipate having for a single row?
-
Predecessor value may be 1 or 4 digit ( Like 2, 200, 2000)
I want to get predecessor in driving predecessor column which has max End date.
- Row number 5 has three predecessor 1, 2 & 3
- If you will check row number 1 has end date 05/17/21
- Row number 2 has end 05/17/21
- Row number 2 has end 04/07/21
- Driving predecessor column should get 2. because row number 2 has max date.
-
I understand your logic. We will have to parse out your predecessors into helper columns. To be able to do that, we need to know how many predecessors you could have on a single row (the number of digits doesn't matter since we leverage the delimiters).
-
Predecessor may be 1 to 10 on a single row ( like 303, 124, 348FS -2d, 339FS -2d)
-
With a potential of up to 10 predecessors and using lead/lag time, etc. it may actually be easier to manually track this.
How many rows total will you have?
I might have a few ideas, but I would need to do a fair amount of testing.
-
Number of rows may be vary by type of project but I guess it may be up to 2000.
-
Ok. I will need to do some testing but will get back to you with what I find out.
-
Thank you Paul
I will wait for your reply
-
I've done some in sheet testing, and honestly I feel it is going to actually be much more efficient to track this manually.
-
Hi Paul,
Yes, I understand your point that it could be easy in manually. But sometimes it will be tricky to understand, scroll the sheet and find the driving predecessor manually will be timing consuming.
Please suggest you have done testing
-
I have done testing which is why I suggested manually.
