When does a column reference need to be in [brackets]?

I'm using a value, Fund1stDigit@row in a formula but it returns as #UNPARSEABLE unless I use brackets,... [Fund1stDigit]@row. I previously only noticed the need to use brackets when there is a space in the column name just wondering why it is needed in this case? Thanks!

    Hi Mike,

It is needed because you are using numbers in your column name. If you use only letters and no spaces it will not require brackets. This might be because it needs to differentiate between column identifiers, and if you are performing a math function.

    Hope this helps.
