Sometimes "Modified by" is captured as [email protected] ?? we are having formula columns based on modified by column, if randomly smartsheet captures it as [email protected], all the calculations are going wrong,...pls advise.

This will happen if a cell that is linked in from another sheet is updated. Do you have any cell links or cross sheet references in your sheet?

  • Hi @Paul Newcome thanks for the response, yes we maintain the user's timezone in another sheet where we calculate GMT based on Modified user timezone. By I don't have cell link in "Modified By" cell, but I have it in other cells. Let me know how can I prevent this happening.

    Thanks.

You won't be able to prevent it. The "Modified By" cell captures date/time for any change in any column for that particular row, and you cannot exclude columns from this.

One option would be to set up a "Record A Date" automation and set the trigger to be based on any of the columns that are not cell linked in, but that will not provide a time stamp.

  • Thanks Paul, "Modified By" is the user name captured immediately after the row updated and the column is managed by smartsheet. I have references to other sheets in a different column. I am not sure why smartsheet captures cell-link in "Modified by" column.

Because the cell link is modifying the row. The "Modified By" cell captures date/time for ANY change in any column for that particular row, and you cannot exclude columns from this.
