how do i pick the correct template
I have two documents - one is a MS project timeline and the other is a task list
Which template do I use where I can see the timeline and see the tasks that have been completed

Template Sets in the Solution Center will give you some good examples of how you may want to format your data.
Here are a couple Template Sets that can give you an idea of how you may want to link sheets up to a Dashboard where you can see a summary of data:
However if you already have your sheets created, you may want to import them first then use your own sheets and customize them from there. Here are some Webinars you may find helpful:
